IDITANATURE is being launched in Homer, Alaska this year!

Head Start and Raspberry Lane Waldorf preschool students in Homer, AK have been challenged to spend 1 to 1.5 hours outdoors each day between March 6 and March 20, while the Iditarod Great Sled Race is underway. Kids will log their minutes spent outdoors in a booklet similar to summer reading program logbooks, which will then be approved and signed by teachers and parents. Those students who spend at least 1,150 minutes in nature (ie. the same number of minutes - or more - as the miles travelled by Iditarod mushers during the race) will win a fantastic prize - an opportunity to visit a local sled dog kennel and go mushing through the snow or a pool party (and if the Raspberry Laners spend TWICE the time in nature, they'll win additional outdoor gear!).

ASD would make this an annual challenge for the kiddos?! Thanks so much for helping spread the word on this fun event. My daughter is actually more interested in the Iditarod race now that she's trying to match, and even double, the mushers' miles in minutes. I had to get out a map today and show her the dogs' route from Anchorage to Nome :)

GOA is going to see how it goes at that school and then try and have it adopted throughout the district, maybe have the schools challenge each other!

I announced it on C&NN's Facebook and Twitter pages, too. It will be fun if people from all over the world take part. (As a side note, I've always been fascinated with the Iditarod. My daughter's 4th grade teacher taught a unit around it, and my daughter caught Iditarod fever. Our family followed the race and her musher, as it turned out, won.)
