Greetings, Conservation Agents. Here is your assignment: The Rocky Mountain Parnassian Butterfly, most commonly found along the front ranges of the Rockies, has been spotted in the Milk River Valley. This disjunct population of the butterfly seems to be attracted to the Stonecrop plants that grow on the windswept unglaciated portions of the Milk River Ridge. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to document the presence of the Rocky Mountain Parnassian Butterfly and Stonecrop, the plant it feeds on, at the Sandstone Ranch. Under the direction of entomologist Ted Pike, you will help solve the mystery of whether the Ranch is host to an isolated prairie population of this unique butterfly species.
Please make sure you eat a solid breakfast, and pack a lunch to bring with you for the day of the event. Snacks and beverages will be provided by NCC to keep you energized and hydrated. Don’t forget to bring extra water, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and rain gear (just in case).
