Colleagues, a request that requires a quick response.  C&NN is submitting a grant proposal for adding nature activities to child care programs to address childhood obesity in kids with ages five and under.  Do any of you have similar programs for kids in this age range that have produced results that we can reference in the grant proposal?  Please respond on this site or to me personally at john.thielbahr003@gmail.com.  Many thanks.  jt

I love the idea Connecting Children to Nature through literature...there are so many incredible books out there that need to be shared...it saddens me to go into classrooms and see TV themed books on the shelves...there is a wealth of beauty and knowledge just waiting to be shared with our young children!

If you are able to do it outside you might like "magic windows"...you can use old wire hangers bent into square shapes or inexpensive simple balsa wood frames(found at your local A&C stores)...kids use these to view a small window of the world in the grass of dirt...looking through and describing what they see.  You can also make available natural colored pencils and crayons, clip boards(mini sized found at Staples) with paper and let the kids draw what they see in a designated natural area.  Natural sculpture and collage is fun too!  I love the idea and hope that maybe I can integrate it into some of my work shops.  Good Luck!

So it is interestingJohn that you have mentioned Book Trails below in Steamboat, CO today.  Emily Krall the director of this amazing program and I are working on getting the Connecting Children to Nature through American Literature exhibit in WV to travel to CO to be on display in their local library.  Hoping all of this can happen and maybe it will become a traveling exhibit in the near future for any libraries to enjoy.  Thinking about creating a little Early Ed. curriculum if this happens to be done outside. 

Great ideas Christina concerning Mud Day can't wait to make my mud pit at home for my little one and her friends.  Love the prizes wish I could be there :)

I love this, especially putting the pictures up at the children's library.  I just made a connection with Anythink Libraries in Colorado through Susie Wirth of Nature Explore (Arbor Day Foundation) to talk about nature reading and activities (our "Naturebraries" initiative where we are asking libraries to host Nature Story Hours for kids and families).  Jan Hummer is also in Colorado, and she just introduced me to a friend of hers who is returned to Steamboat to start something called Book Trails.  Lots going on in Colorado.  Keep us posted on your mud adventures.  jt

Hi Everyone,  I know its early but I'm gearing up for International Mud day 2012. It's a great time to start organizing an event for fun mud activities. I'm doing a Mud Day with all the preschools in my valley. I'm doing a photo contest. On June 29th each program/classroom is doing a mud activity that they are comfortable with (my program will of course make a full on mud pit, but that's not for everyone). I just got the ok to display the photo's at the children's library, and we will have 3 prizes. One a spa day/mud wrap for the teachers of the winning classroom, I'm donating one of my classroom size felted soap kit (for fun clean up)  for the 2nd place class, and a local baker is donating delicious vegan "mud pie" for the 3rd place classroom. In the end the kids all win! Let me know of any other ideas to let people in my community know its happening all over!

Hi All - I think you'll be interested in this alarming new study: Nearly half of preschoolers are not getting outside to play every day. It seems that parents and caregivers aren't taking their kids out, and that preschools don't often offer enough outdoor play either. What do you think? What's been your experience?
