Comment by Sarah Shealy on February 19, 2011 at 9:15am Hi everyone! I posted this message on the Natural Teachers Network wall and John thought you all should see it too! Here goes:
Hi all! I am a children's book publicist and pop in from time to time to let you know about appropriate books and materials to enhance your curriculum about the natural world. I'm working on a book called ARBOR DAY SQUARE by Kathryn Galbraith for ages 4-8. If you're doing anything for Arbor Day in your classroom, you might be interested in this free curriculum guide for the book: http://tinyurl.com/4p3xmcm
You can definitely adapt parts of the guide for younger children and family activities.
Enjoy!!

Comment by Patricia Rowe Gilkerson on January 6, 2011 at 7:05am In addition to teaching preschool, I am also a writer. I have a manuscript for a picture book intended to get kids enthusiastic and excited about all the things they can do in nature outside. I wrote it mostly because I wanted one to read to my kids at school. Here's the question: does anyone know a publisher who might be interested?
Thanks in advance,
Pat
Comment by Stephanie Rach-Wilson on January 5, 2011 at 9:22am Amazing morning with kindergarten and first grade classes this morning. There were streaks of pink and a whispy white cloud hovering over the mountain and I couldn't resist but called everyone out to see.
We gathered to imagine what the shape could be - "A bird with a very long wingspan hovering over it's nest," from the mind of a five year old won the votes.
It took just ten minutes - a few great inhales of fresh air - and kids went back to class with the biggest smiles. The great reminder: always have your camera and it only takes a moment to connect and be inspired by nature! Have a wonderful day everyone!

Make sure you check out Juliet blogs for outdoor ideas. Please also check out the twitter hashtag #playoutdoors for great ideas and news.
I think the workshop would be of interest for teachers as well as for parents. We will focus on getting outside in the winter and how to be prepared for the weather and what to do outside.
Hi Patricia, wonderful to see your blog and that your getting kids in touch with nature. I work at an environmental preschool and write an article bi-monthly for the City of Aspen's Kids First newsletter. My main focus is how to simply connect kids with nature. I understand the time involved in snow clothes! Winter is a great time to do tracking, we took old blocks of wood, foam sheet (the kids love to cut it) and made our own track stamps. I did realistic ones and the kids did their own, we looked at books to see if we could identify who's tracks they were. The Library has many great books! Science with snow and ice is great too, the list go's on! If you would like to email me I can list some great tracking books, and more ideas at wildwoodschool@comcast.net Maybe your work will catch on and they'll do more in the classroom on a daily basis.
