Hello Friends in the Grassroots!

Some of you may have received an e-mail note from Avery Cleary and me, asking you to help spread the word to your networks about C&NN and our "Big Dreams Win" campaign to reach the critical mass needed to reverse the trend of children's disconnect from nature.

In case you didn't receive it, a link is below. We know that, in addition to the wonderful work you're already doing, many of you want to help C&NN and the children and nature movement. We wanted to make it easy for you to spread the word about our work to your own networks and get more people involved.

Let's also keep the conversation going about ways that we can help all of our efforts. Cheers to a wonderful holiday season and to getting more kids out into nature.

Hi John,  Thanks for asking. To clarify, this group was started at the request of folks leading collaborative efforts (rather than individual programs) so they could talk to each other. Yes! all size collaborations and new collaborations are most welcome! And this is a place for people who would like guidance about starting a collaborative. 

For people who want to connect in their region, best to refer them to the C&NN directory to find the coordinator/leader near them.  The coordinator can get them connected to their local network - whatever that looks like in their area.

Appreciate all the ways you help people connect!

Great idea to improve the coordination of members of this group, and a place to refer new members or people who just want to connect with their children and nature colleagues in their own geographic area.  It may not be clear to everyone who exactly is a "Grassroots Campaign Coordinator" and whether you have to be an existing GCC to be able to participate in this group.  I would hope that this group would be open to anyone who is leading any size of children and nature program or initiative.  I look forward to seeing this activity on this site.  jt

Hi from the Greater Baltimore Children & Nature Collaborative (GBCAN)! The only data we keep so far is feedback from our annual GBCAN conferences (200 participants) through a Survey Monkey. We are in the process of mapping nearby nature and the orgs close by that  provide family programming or nearby naturalists who might join a family nature club outing. We are using the Green Map system.  We will also be tracking attendance at our upcoming workshops that are calendared out 6 mos ahead. These workshops are provided by our GBCAN members on a volunteer basis and offered free to the public. They include parent workshops for how to connect kids with nature, youth workshops for organizing mentoring opportunities and peer-to-peer actions/outdoor adventures, health forums for pediatricians, etc. The above activity mimics the successful strategies of a Baltimore network of community gardeners. GBCAN has a steering group of 18 members. The Parks & People Foundation provides a graduate intern for 30 hrs. a week of organizing time to implement the collaborative objectives and outreach. We are replicating the C&NN initiatives on a local level--Family Nature Clubs, Natural Teachers, Natural Leaders, and we are connecting with the MD Partnership for Children in Nature to align our objectives with the state initiatives including a focus on increasing nature play spaces.

Hi Kathy! That's really exciting news. If you have a link to a news story about the convention, we'll put it up on our C&NN.org news site. Very exciting stuff coming out of NC and NCCAN! And, like the children and nature movement, in general, it sounds like youth leaders are stepping up. Lucky you to have Diane Gordon as a speaker, too.

Recovering from a great state convention yesterday. NCCAN! in North Carolina had over 100 at the event with 16 breakout sessions and a wonderful keynote speaker- Diane Gordon from Children, Nature  and You Best news- divided into 6 regional NCCAN! groups and 6 folks stepped up to serve as regional coordinators! Already folks were talking of expanding next year's conference to include a bigger youth track

( we loved hearing from the young people present). WOW!

 

Media covered the event well and we had one reporter stay to attend some sessions and a news team carried the interviews all day on their news channel as well as put a story up on their website.

Now on to Let's G.O.!!!

Are any of you conducting evaluation of your campaigns, specifically of how you are operating/running them?  We're looking for effective models or tools for evaluating the success of the NH Children in Nature Coalition in achieving its mission.

Since the C&NN is also trying to track success of the movement, maybe a good starting place would be the questions in the Grassroots Survey.  It's on the website under Research and Publications - the questions are in the back.  No question that it is hard data to get when you operate as a collaborative as many organizations, not all of whom track or even have a way of tracking everything.  After all - nobody takes attendance in the backyard, in the woods or the park!

We're in a different situation as we're not tracking the impact of a single program or organization, but the impact of the coalition and the movement in the state.  Plenty of anecdotal evidence and qualitative data, slim on the quantitative data.

Hi,

We are in our third year and a few very simple tactics we use:

1. In the field, we track the attendance and have a goal to increase both retention and also bring in new faces

2. When we run clinics in the stores we get feedback readily from the managers and employees from both an educational perspective (if an employee doesn't have a child but they observe what we're doing and take our Chipper Tips we receive comments of how this is helping them better communicate with customers they are trying to outfit for outdoor experiences.

 

Virtually - we run analytics on our site and see where the greatest traffic is coming from, sign ups from our social media endeavors, open rates from emails and click throughs to content.

 

Are you running any analytics on your site? And do you utilize emails for communication? There are some tools readily available to you.

Read the latest news from the Ohio Grassroots. Their five regional Leave No Child Inside collaboratives have been very active and productive. I think you'll be inspired, as I was, by their accomplishments.
