A big thank you to everyone who participated in C&NN’s Serve Outside September!
We are inspired by the many ways you help your community and the natural world.
We have two winners in the random drawing for REI gift cards. Congratulations to
Lara Reynolds, Oahu Invasive Species Committee, Honolulu, Hawaii
who will receive a $100 REI gift card for registering an S.O.S. event
and Lisa Leihy, Clean Up Club, Parks and Shorelines, Tampa, Florida who will receive
a $100 REI gift card for returning the S.O.S. survey.
In Hawaii the O'ahu Invasive Species Committee (OISC) in partnership with Lyon Arboretum
meets monthly to remove harmful invasive plants from the island before they have a
chance to spread and cause damage to our natural resources. In September they
removed the seedlings of two invasive plant species from the grounds of the arboretum
to prevent their spread and establishment into the healthy native forests at higher elevations.
Lyon Arboretum is the only location on O‘ahu where these species are growing, which means
that volunteers helped work toward completely eliminating them from the island before
they do harm!
In Florida, Clean Up Club families met to clean up parks and shorelines around Tampa Bay.
They visited five parks and two shorelines in Tampa Bay, picked up trash,
recycled what they could, and raised awareness about pollution.
Lisa said, “We loved being a part of this campaign!”
Note: The winners were selected in random drawings of all those who registered
events and all those who returned the survey.
