Grassroots Gathering: Nature Rocks presentation

For those who missed it, here is the Nature Rocks presentation from the Gathering: 2009-09 NR_C&NN_Conf.ppt . You can learn about how Nature Rocks can support you to reach parents and caregivers to connect their families with nature.

Nature Rocks is a marketing campaign to bring families to your great programs and it is a communications platform and set of resources you can use to make your outreach even more effective.

We've created a customizable Nature Rocks pamphlet local organizations can use to reach out to the public. All you need to do is add your logo and information on your program in designated spots and you've got a great pamplet to promote your program! A hearty welcome to the Children and Nature Network. I am glad you found this web site, even in a backward's kind of way. We have all arrived here from the back: our childhood spent in nature that we loved.

A lot is happening, and it is growing and changing every day, I would encourage you to join the Nature Clubs for Families group and download the Tool Kit (available on the main page of the C&NN web site), which has many good ideas about things to do with children in nature. The leaders of that group Chip and Ashley Donahue are wonderful and will welcome you with open arms and many good ideas. The "Nature Circles" tool is also a simple way to introduce young children to nature.

There are many non-profits already active in the movement. You might want to take a look at the map on the C&NN web site to see what already exists in or near Rhode Island, which is near to my heart as a graduate of the Officer Candidate School in Newport. There are all kinds of large non-profit nature centers that are working with children in nature as well. Forming your own non-profit is a serious commitment so I would not jump into it lightly. You might have some nature-based pre-schools in your area like Montessori and Waldorf. Pick an age group you want to work with and then see what is already out there. Keep the dream, that's always the first step. Glad you are with us. John

I actually came to this website in a backwards kind of way... I am starting to blog about things to do with children in nature... In a few years my dream is to have either a nature based preschool or community center; I am not a non-profit right now, but am interested in learning about what others are doing. Any tips? Stories? Encouragement? to share with me?
