Bear Cubs are fun, because they're just learning that independence thing.

That's how a good Pack turns great! Don't be afraid to get "down and dirty" with the boys; climb into that creek, lift up some rocks and show them some salamanders and crayfish! It is imperative that we get these kids back into the woods, and scouting teaches them soooo much for life!

I have a friend who got his Eagle in 1942, Troop 27 Cape Fear Council, and he has told me that the only reason he survived Operation Market Garden and especially the Battle of the Bulge, was because of what he learned in Scouts.

The den is third grade. Our pack leader took me through what training is available and I plan to jump right in on that. I love hiking and wildlife, so I would like to integrate that in perhaps a little more than has been the case in prior years. We have some great parents with diverse interests and I want to leverage that as best as possible.

That's great Justin!! Welcome to the "one hour a week" club! LOL
I would suggest taking all the training you can, especially the on-line stuff. Get up to date with your basic training and take BALOO training! After that, you can take the knot tying classes, compass orientation, etc.

The one thing you have to remember is, the kids will get out of it what you put into it. If you are a hiker, take them on weekend hikes to a local park with trails, or if your an amateur astronomer, teach them about the constellations. A pack is only as good as it's utilization of everyones unique skills and passions. What year are your scouts?

Fun news - our first Den meeting was last night and we were without a Den Leader (previous Den Leader's son is no longer in scouting due to sports). So, I volunteered as the new Den Leader. Should be a ton of fun & I will be open to any tips! ;)

Great to hear from you Justin! I agree that scouting and being outdoors is good for the whole family.

Steve, Leave No Trace is a wonderful program. It's terrific that you're dovetailing that with your scout work. The work your Den is doing sounds great and meaningful, and it sounds like you're giving the kids as many outdoor experiences as you can.

Your REI program looks terrific too. I added it in the Event area of the forum so more people can read about it and hopefully attend.
