Does anyone have any suggestions for nature stories that get kids excited to go outside?

Comment by John Thielbahr on June 12, 2012 at 9:15am Excellent suggestions, Carmen. Thanks for sharing these. I hope others will share their experiences as well to benefit our group. Our "Naturebraries" initiative hopes to have kids read at libraries either before or after a trail walk, as well as read pages along the hiking trail or area. If we can involve local libraries in our movement, every community will be getting more kids outside to balance their time on electronics. Thanks for all you do in Alaska. Hope to see you in Shepherdstown. I hear there is mud there. jt
Comment by Carmen Field on June 11, 2012 at 11:56pm Thanks, John! I learned about StoryWalk from the International Migratory Bird Day website (http://birdday.org/2012materials/Storywalk.pdf). We tried our first StoryWalk here in Homer, AK as part of a family bird walk last month (an event during our annual Shorebird Festival). We learned in hindsight to place the pages further down the trail (not with the first page near the trailhead at the beginning of the hike as we'd done) - kids were anxious to explore the forest trail right away and were settled down enough to read later. Next time we might place the story on a return loop of the trail in reverse order, so we wind up the story and hike at the same time. Just some thoughts for folks wanting to try this wonderful activity...
Cheers,
Carmen
Comment by John Thielbahr on June 6, 2012 at 5:10pm Here is a link to a fabulous activity that will improve reading and inspire kids to be outside. It is called StoryWalk by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT. I have mentioned this before but now there are more details on Anne's FAQ: http://www.vtbikeped.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=arti... Please spread this around to anyone who touches the life of a child, especially librarians but even child care professionals and all educators. Many thanks. jt
I would like to see more story tellers start to speak out and connect with our lives. We will be telling some storys for the UNF's Child Development and Research Center around a fire at UNF"s Wildlife Sanctuary JAX, FL. at 6pm This April 18th, Wed. If your here join us!
Michael Mead Look up the Half Boy Story
He calls storys the "Store House" of info ready to be unlocked by the listener when they are ready to hear the truths. All is different and all ready at different times. even as our life progresses we find new truths in the story that match our place where we are in life.
Comment by John Thielbahr on April 16, 2012 at 2:13pm Hello everyone. Jan Hummer just posted a link to a terrific new blog by Emily Krall, director of Book Trails in Colorado: http://childnatureamericanlit.blogspot.com/ . This blog has a magnificent list of nature books to inspire kids to read and get outside. Please click on and share your thoughts. jt
Comment by Stephanie Rach-Wilson on March 26, 2012 at 10:24pm Our Let's Go Chipper eco-educational series excites and readies kids for adventures in the great outdoors. It's correlated for schools, 21st Century learning ...but it's all fun. Kids learn best through laughter and play and Chipper's adventures in the great outdoors have kids asking to go outside. Please check it out www.letsgochipper.com. Books, apps, and community programs.

Comment by Suz Lipman on February 3, 2012 at 8:01am Hi Everyone.
Thank you for posting about the decline of the depiction of nature in children's picture books, Marghanita. We just put that on our C&NN news site:

And, thanks for letting us know about the Sense of Wonder contest, Margie! Seems we should get the word out about that, too.
Cheers!

Here is a contest for you: EPA's Rachel Carson Sense of Wonder Contest. It's intergenerational. I entered with my grandson in 2010. http://www.epa.gov/aging/resources/thesenseofwonder/index.htm
