slow laundry.

Living in my grandparents' home often times leaves an ache deep inside me for my childhood. I want so badly to go back. Taking baths in the summer in a giant metal washtub in the side yard with my cousins, sharing the one bicycle kept in the shed. Being stung nearly to death by bees in the very same shed. Climbing the huge old tree in the side yard so high that I thought I could touch the clouds. My grandfather taking me in his bedroom and giving me half a stick of Wrigley's gum from his… Continue

we eat dirt.

My clan eats dirt. We play with our chicken, with our bare hands. We run around barefooted all summer. We eat things that fall on the floor. We dig creatures out of the ground to play with and chase our siblings with. We rarely mop.

And we get sick. Not killer sick, just colds and sniffles and coughs. And not terribly often. Now, lots of people like to voice their concerns to me that my kiddos get sick because we let them play with compost and clean out the chicken coop. We prefer to… Continue

Go Chip, Go! Let 'em dangle! (Easier to do than watch your kids do, I know.) I just found Chip (he was on page TWO of your friends...I only looked at the first page).

Yes, NCTC is fantastic and we are planning to go too. We hope to get more family nature clubbers there, as this part of the organization seems to be under-represented at the Gathering. Let's see, busy, mortgage-strapped parents with no baby sitters...wonder why they aren't going to the gathering?

See you there!

Hi Ashley,

Just saw Chip's article in the Appalachian Trail newsletter. FANTASTIC! You guys are such an elegant voice for the cause and it is so cool all the things you are doing. This was a great story. I never knew Chip was as (self-described) "nature wuss." That makes me admire him even more. It's easier for us free range kids to become free range parents, but it takes something special for someone who didn't grow up in nature to embrace it the way Chip has.

Best to you and Chip! (Chip doesn't seem to be on the ning site?). We missed you guys at the Gathering here in San Diego this year!

Ron

Hi Ashley!
Thanks for friending me! I was looking for you on this site but couldn't find your page, so I'm glad you found me.
Love all that you and your family are doing to inspire others. Keep up the great work!

Hey Ashley and Chip - Great to meet you too. I wish that I could have been 2 places at once and attend your talk. I too am concerned about the liability issue and would love to know what you discussed. Amy? Let's chat in the coming days.

Best - Margaret Rietano

Ashley, so many people in CO were inspired by what you and Chip are doing -- including me. I came out of the gathering wanting to do more on the liability issue -- one that came up for the NCFF leaders that Chip interviewed -- and others. May be ready for a sub-committee to develop a strategy and solutions.

All the best,
