The John Muir Highway project was created with a goal of having the entire SR Highway 132 named John Muir Highway and continuing on SR Hwy 120 to Yosemite Valley. The purpose is to honor John Muir and promote an alternative, geotourism approach for travelers on their way to visiting Yosemite National Park.

The project is expanding to include a proposed John Muir Geotourism Center, a Youth Education Program for urban and rural students to share Muir's writings and experiences and Docent led hikes following in his footsteps.
