NJSACC:The Network for NJ's Afterschool Communities
Bio
Diane M. Genco has worked with families for over thirty plus years.
Her experience ranges from child care for the children of migrant farm workers to day care for senior citizens. A native of Buffalo, New York, she attended the State University College at Buffalo and received a BS in Human Development, Family and Community Relations. She then earned her MS in Education and Child Care Administration from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Before her move to New Jersey, Diane was the Executive Director of the Lawrence Extended Day Program in Brookline, Massachusetts, for ten years.
After her move to Westfield, New Jersey, Diane volunteered to serve on the board of NJSACC: the Network for New Jersey’s Afterschool Communities (www.njsacc.org) for 4 years.
During her tenure as Board Chair, she spearheaded the first strategic plan that moved the organization from a volunteer organization to a mid-sized not-for-profit. In 2000, she was appointed the first Executive Director, a position she still holds. NJSACC mission is to promote and support the development, continuity and expansion of quality programs for children and youth during out-of-school time in New Jersey. NJSACC office is located in the Bell Tower of the First Baptist Church in Westfield, New Jersey.
In 2007, NJSACC became part of the National Afterschool Network funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. NJSACC receives funding from the NJ Department of Education, NJ Department of Human Services and the NJ Department of Children and Families. In September, 2009, NJSACC was selected to launch an afterschool science network in partnership with New Jersey 4H. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). New Jersey is one of 8 states selected to launch this pilot program to train youth providers statewide in science, green works and technology.
NJSACC is in the midst of a statewide campaign, Celebrate Afterschool! Outdoors in the Garden State.
The purpose is to involve communities in the Garden State in connecting children with nature through afterschool programs. NJSACC‘s primary partners to launch this campaign are: the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, the NJ Department of Education, the NJ Association of Environmental Educators, the Governor’s Commission on Environmental Education, NJ Audubon, the Office of the NJ Secretary of State, Boys and Girls Clubs of NJ, Rutgers Gardens, the NJ Department of Human Services, and NJ Council on the Arts. This campaign has received national attention and is being replicated by other states.
Diane Genco was chosen by New Jersey Audubon Society’s Education Committee and the Board of Directors to receive the 2009
Patricia F. Kane Environmental Education Award of Excellence.
This award is for one’s dedication to ensure that children are receiving learning opportunities about the environment that expand well beyond the classroom walls and textbooks.
Nationally, Diane is a Training Associate for the National Institute on Out-of-School Time (www.niost.org) at Wellesley College. In this capacity she has trained school administrators and afterschool professionals in 42 states.
An active member of the National Monarch Teachers Network, she rears, tags and releases Monarch Butterflies. Diane presents educational presentations to afterschool programs on Monarchs and their migration journey.
As a volunteer in New Jersey, she is involved in the restoration of Greenwood Gardens, a 28 acre public garden in Short Hills, New Jersey and also serves on the Board of Directors of the Plainfield Area YMCA.
Diane Genco is a 22 year resident of Westfield, NJ where the family residence is certified as National Monarch Waystation and is a National Wildlife Certified Wildlife Habitat. She is committed to sustainable communities and providing families and children the tools to commit to be stewards of the earth.
