This is My Rock

We are ever so lucky that our preschool is bordered by beautiful natural bushland. We value the bush as a part of our learning environment, and take small groups of children out into it on (almost) a daily basis. When I found a poem "This is my Rock" by David McCord, it instantly spoke to me of the feeling of ownership we are seeing in our kids after months, and in some cases a couple of years of exploring our bush trail. This is My Rockby David McCordThis is my rockAnd here I runTo steal the…See More

building a bush shelter with preschoolers

After spending the past few weeks writing about natural elements in children's play spaces, I inspired myself to build a bush cubby with the kids at preschool.

I gathered up some intrepid stick hunters and we headed outside to gather up some of the long, sturdy sticks we could see lying on the ground.

Jennifer, I'm going to turn the "Natural Teachers Network 2010" group off and move to the new one "Natural Teachers Network." Sorry for the confusion. I had no idea that folks would be signing in and signing up so quickly.

Welcome, Jennifer! I'm very glad you found us. Your work on outdoor education is extremely inspiring. Your site is very informative -- it's wonderful to see and read about children getting so much outdoor education and to enjoy the beauty and whimsy in their outdoor spaces and fairy gardens. I look forward to being in touch.

Hello Jennifer

Thanks for joining this site. I think you might be the first member from Australia! How cool is that!

I've thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog - it's SUPER. Interestingly, Clare Warden who founded Mindstretchers does visit Australia and gives very good talks and workshops. So keep an eye out there. She's involved in the Nature Action Collaborative for Children which is another international organisation that seeks to reconnect children with nature.

Please do keep in touch.

Best wishes
Juliet
