Hello! Thanks for stopping by. My work is all about getting children outdoors and supporting adults to enable this to happen.

I blog at "I'm a teacher, get me OUTSIDE here!" - it's well known for lots of advice and ideas, with over 600K page annual page views.

I wrote the book "Dirty Teaching: A Beginner's Guide to Learning Outdoors" It's been a best seller on Amazon UK but is less well known in North America.

I was the Critical Friend for a book "Taking Learning Outside the Classroom: Theory and Guidelines" - Richard Louv wrote the forward!

I run lots of courses, undertake small contract work and give keynote presentations. Please do visit my website and blog for more information. My longest input has been working on the Forest Kindergarten project in Glasgow & the Clyde Valley. My company did the feasibility study, wrote the training course materials and I'm just finishing writing the "Train the Forest Kindergarten Trainer" course so that others deliver the course. Yay!

I ghost write for other organisations including the Scottish Government and Forestry Commission Scotland. Google "Outdoor Learning: Practical Guidance for Teachers and Practitioners in Scotland" to give you a flavour!

I'm a former head teacher (school principal) of 3 schools ranging in size from 6 to 270 pupils. Prior to entering the education sector, I undertook a wide variety jobs in outdoor and environmental work. My interest and enthusiasm for outdoor learning stemmed from working in a Puerto Rican urban environmental centre in Philadelphia (USA), halfway through my environmental science degree in the Eighties. As a teacher, I maintained a passion for being outdoors. I undertook a year-long teaching exchange to an outdoor centre in Canada. I've participated in several courses and study visits abroad to see the bigger, international picture. In 2008 a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship enabled me to find out more about outdoor technologies in North America, Sweden and the Czech Republic.

Creative STAR has a Facebook page which is pretty active. Do stop by and say hello!

I'm a teacher, get me OUTSIDE here!

This is my weekly blog which aims to be an emergency exit for anyone who wants to get more children outside more often!

Also, if you are looking for books about outdoor learning, I have several listmanias on the Amazon UK website.

Finally, because I like talking about learning outdoors and the benefits of nature play, I give presentations and keynote speeches. As yet I don't have a video but here is a LTS Active Learning EY.pdf which gives you a glimpse of a recent keynote (without the practical activities, me talking and the music)!

Waldkindergarten - Forest Kindergarten in Germany

This blog post has come from my regular blog, I'm a teacher, get me OUTSIDE here! But I thought visitors to Children & Nature Network might enjoy this too.

Whilst attending the 4th International Skogsmulle Symposium in Japan, several presentations were given. This is a guest post by Anita Egle, a Swede who resides in Germany and has run Skogsmulle sessions in Bavaria since 1989. It is a written…

Literacy in the Woods at the Secret Garden Outdoor Nursery

Last Easter I was fortunate enough to spend a day at the Secret Garden Outdoor Nursery in Fife. It was one of those magical days which remain etched in my memory for many reasons. I was particularly bowled over by the numerous examples of literacy happening spontaneously. Very often, this is a concern raised by educators and parents... are the core skills being covered such as maths and language and if so, how, when children are…

Thank you Juliette! I hope you enjoyed the interviews. The full series has 30 in series 1 and I'm on my way to another 30 in series 2. Wonderful people inspiring and working together for a wonderful movement. Richard Louv is part of my upcoming Series 2, quite an honor to connect with him and hear him share his passion.

Hi Juliet!  I'm heading over to the UK for the IPA conference in Wales in June/July.  Any chance you are attending?  If not, we should think about how to meet up while I'm overseas.  It would be a priviliage to get to know you and all the fantastic work you're doing in Scotland!

Hello Juliet, nice to meet you!

I hope we can do something good together here. I'd like to share experiences and maybe projects, and find the way to make them known by as many people as possible. Especially children. It would take very little for them to discover and love nature, but most of parents and teachers do not know. And we all lose a great occasion.

Best wishes to you

Hi Juliet,

Thanks for connecting with me here, too. I'm sure there will be all sorts of new outdoor fun for 2011. Can't wait to see what happens!

Thanks Juliet.   Will do!

In fact, I tried to do so this AM, but learned you must first accept me as your friend.

I'm now awaiting your decision!

Cheers from this side of the Atlantic,

Season's Greetings Juliet from Toronto.   Thanks for reaching out.

I'd be glad to join the discussions.  My wife and I have been editing/publishing our non-profit Green Teacher magazine for almost 20 years now, and have also published 6 books. You can learn more about both, and freely view a digital version of a recent back issue at www.greenteacher.com.  Our focus is on publishing innovative ways to connect children, 6-19 years of age, to the natural world.

I should also mention that Green Teacher started in Wales in 1996.  We started what was to be a Canadian edition in 1991, but the UK edition failed shortly thereafter.  Within a few years, we ceased viewing ourselves as Canadian and have been welcoming contributions from around the world ever since.

With that introduction out of the way,  I look forward to the discussions and contributing in any way that I can.

Hi Juliet,

Great to hear from you.  I've just sent a request to join the international group.  I've read with much interest the postings from you and others on cn&n connect.  Great information and discussion!

All the best,

Hi Juliet!

Great to hear from you. Yes, I do indeed know Sue, and helped her to get Forest School started in Norfolk. I'm now making sure that all of our trainee primary and early years teachers here at Anglia Rusking University get to hear about Forest School and are offered the opportunity to learn outside with me at least once during their training.

Hi Juliet

It would be great to connect with you.  I am the admin of the Earth Scouts Network which is a program of the Earth Charter U.S. organization.  It would be great to migrate and import Earth Scouts into the UK!  Let's talk about possibilities.  Looking forward to hearing from you!
