Nature is vast in its beauty as it is diverse in its wildlife!

Nature is vast in its beauty as it is diverse in its wildlife! I am passionate about Mother Nature and love to promote conservation through my efforts to connect youth to the outdoors. I developed my roots early on by reading National Geographic magazines and following the stories of my childhood hero, Dr. Jane Goodall. This week I have entered a challenge through Disneynature, which is promoting their new movie Chimpanzee, opening on Earth Day! Share in my excitement as I post facts about…See More

NATURE: Fun, fresh, exciting, educational, and relaxing!

Fun, fresh, exciting, educational, and relaxing. These are just a few words I would use to describe the outdoors. It's all around us, and thank goodness! I wouldn't know what to do if I didn't have nature in my life. For some, the outdoors is a twenty minute walk after work with their companion or a weekend spent harvesting vegetables in the garden. For others, it takes the form of activities like fishing, camping, or kayaking. For me, it's hiking for hours through forest trails or teaching…See More

Bio
Katia had the good fortune of meeting Dr. Jane Goodall by chance aboard an airline flight in 2001. After talking about topics in animal advocacy, Dr. Goodall shared information about her international program called Roots & Shoots. The whole experience lasted only 15 minutes but had a very profound impact on Katia's life.

In 2003, Katia became a member of the national Roots & Shoots College Leadership Council, and just a year later, the West Coast-native established WSU R&S at Washington State University in Pullman. During her four years as group leader, WSU R&S organized countless projects, including hosting Earth Day celebrations, working with the local humane society, organizing stream cleanups and making enrichment toys for captive primates. They joined national campaigns, such as Campus Climate Challenge and Focus the Nation Teach-In.

An inspiring experience for Katia came when she met the young members of Moscow Roots & Shoots at Lena Whitmore Elementary School in Idaho for the first time. "We took them out to learn about horses at a local sanctuary called Orphan Acres," Katia said. "They were full of energy and so amazing to work with. I was inspired by their enthusiasm to learn and make a difference."

In the past, Katia has worked as an animal care technician at the Oregon Humane Society and as a project leader for the WSU Center for Civic Engagement. In 2007, she earned a bachelor's degree in Zoology from WSU, after which she served in an AmeriCorps position for a year, working at the Palouse Discovery Science Center in Pullman. During her term, Katia promoted environmental education, coordinated volunteers and planned outreach activities in the community.

In 2008, she was one of 100 outstanding young leaders who came together from 28 countries for the first-ever Jane Goodall Global Youth Summit. Most recently, she completed a one year Graduate Fellowship position as a member of the Jane Goodall Institute’s national staff. In this position she provided very important representation and outreach at Roots & Shoots and Jane Goodall Institute events. This often included travel to national events or conferences that required a strong spokesperson and to universities that requested a presenter.

She serves as a core team member of the Natural Leaders Network and attended the very first gathering in San Francisco, as well as the Grassroots Leadership Gathering in Keystone, Colorado.

Her interests center on youth programs, education, community outreach, and animal advocacy. One day, she hopes to establish a humane education and community outreach center that cares for animals on site and focuses on youth being a part of the daily goals and overall mission to foster respect and proper care of all animals and their environments.
Katia shares her life with three cats and her dog Lady. She loves traveling, cooking, animal photography, listening to music, and spending time in nature.
