"Title: There's a Hair in my Dirt: A Worm's Story
Author: Gary Larson
Publication date: 1999
Recommended ages: As a bedtime book, when my youngest was 4 we could always count on this book to make him laugh. Not sure he understood it all,…"
"I went skiing with my 8- and 12-year-old boys at Norquay, and we saw them doing some avalanche bombing at the top of the mountain. As I answered their questions about why the ski patrol was intentionally setting off avalanches, it got me to thinking…"
"We're lucky in Calgary. In an hour you can be in Banff National Park, Kananaskis Provincial Park and a number of parks and recreational areas on the prairies. Within an hour and half and you're in Kootenay and Yoho National Parks,…"
"Suz, the production company's website says it's going to be on Omni in Alberta in November, but there's no date. Nature's Invitation
On many of the hikes, scrambles and snowshoes I lead for the Calgary Outdoor Recreation…"
"A couple years ago I put a few big sandstone rocks in my flower bed to fill holes that my dog dug up, and inadvertently created a nature play area.
Last week my seven-year-old announced he was going mining in the backyard. A couple minutes later I…"
"I agree with Janice: taking it all on yourself can lead to burn out. I view self care as a plane ride. If the oxygen masks pop out, you have to put yours on before you help others put theirs on or you'll pass out and be no good to anybody. If…"
"Just came across this Helen Keller quote while flipping through Freedom of the Hills: "Security is mostly superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the…"
"On the kid's hikes I lead, I try to make sure I find time with just me and my kids. Luckily, there are usually two or three other parents with lots of mountain experience, so it's easy for me to hang out on the trail with my boys or find…"
"My brother lives in Australia, and my kids want to go see their cousins but they don't want to go camping there. They and I agree that we'd much rather go where there are bears and avalanches than where there are poisonous snakes and…"
"Although our winters aren't as severe or dark as in Alaska, they can seem that way to people who don't embrace what winter has to offer. Is it cold? Yes, but not once you start moving, even when it's -30. The secret to my happiness in…"
"Great photos! Happy kids! Any good I may be doing is purely out of self-interest. When I take my kids hiking alone, the complaining starts within a five minutes. When I take them out as part of a group of kids, they run down the trail and all I hear…"
I started hiking in the Canadian Rockies when I was six. Over the years I've added scrambling, mountaineering, downhill and AT skiing, snowshoeing and stuff like that to my list of pass-times. A couple years ago I co-founded the Calgary Outdoor Recreation Association (www.meetup.com/Calgary-Outdoor-Recreation-Association-CORA/), through which I lead kid's hikes. In many ways these are my favorite hikes, so I'm in the process of starting a kid's outdoor group, Mountain Youth Experience.
Hi Ken, Avery Cleary, our Grassroots Outreach Coordinator, asked me to contact you to invite you to register your nature club in the C&NN Movement Directory. I thought I'd forward directions for how to do that. Please let me know if you need help or if anything's unclear. I look forward to see your listing, your activities and further connection on our forum. Cheers, Suz
