Rachel Federman is a writer and editor whose books include Test Your Dog (HarperCollins), Kiss in the Dark (Random House), The Great Music Trivia Quiz Book (HarperCollins), Jiggle Shots (Abrams), and the upcoming young-adult nonfiction book Grossopedia (HarperCollins). She lives in Manhattan where she tries to balance a freelance writing career with caring for a thrill-seeking toddler.

Through her writing she hopes to help ensure that the childhoods like the kind she had, the ones that took place before cell phones, play dates, music classes for 1-year-olds, Facebook and flickr, won’t have been the last authentic experience of that magical time. She hopes to serve as a voice against hyper-parenting, against tiger moms, against materialism and entitlement, against a culture of overachievement, against overscheduling, against the movement of kids growing older younger. Here are essays, from a recovering crazy, scattered, over-accomodating mom, aiming to help you be still, enjoy your kids, watch them grow. I hope to inspire tree-climbing and little gardens, pretend games, makeshift toys and dirty hands.

Rachel - thanks for you comment.  I agree!  I too remember teachers in HS and college holding classes outside - it was great!  I wish more would do that these days at the HS and MS - I keep telling my teenager that we're going to raise a whole generation of 'vampires' if we don't get them out in the sun more :)
