Syd Jones, recently named Executive Director of Big City Mountaineers (BCM), has a strong history of volunteerism, coursework in nonprofit management, and twenty-five years of experience as a marketing communications executive helping organizations build successful relationships to drive results. He also brings a compelling personal story that fuels a passion, commitment and strong belief in BCM’s mission to provide opportunities for under-resourced urban teens to develop a new outlook on life through wilderness experiences.
A native of New York City, Syd grew up in Harlem in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Living in housing projects, he faced the daily threat of drugs and its associated senseless violence; both had a long-lasting impact on his life. Syd was fortunate to have exposure to organizations like BCM, the Boy Scouts and after-school programs dedicated to helping at-risk teens. He credits these organizations as providing the adult guidance and mentoring he needed to thrive in difficult circumstances and become a successful business person, positive citizen, and role mode
I hope you had a great summer season! You employed a couple of my former staff members, and they had great things to say about the program.
As a fellow Coloradoan, Children in Nature Advocate, and educator, I hope you will check out the events we are hosting up here in Florissant this fall, specifically Stalking Education in the Wild (www.stalkingeducation.org) and our No Child Left Inside Family Fun Day (www.sanbornwesterncamps.com/sept25) and share them with your family, friends, educators, and Others Who Would Love This Stuff.
Hi Syd! Welcome to C&NN. Glad you found us. Your program looks terrific. I look forward to learning much more about it, and I'm sure others here do, too. I hope you join some groups and discussions and find the forum a rich source of sharing and resources. Cheers!
