"Thanks Yasmin. I love this insightful reasoning. I would have to say that almost the same thing motivated me, although I couldn't have put it so eloquently. Also, the fact that I was born and raised as a child where I live now again - and I…"

Why I started a Nearby Nature Club

I am sitting at my desk gathering my thoughts about what I most want to share as a panelist on Connecting San Diego's Kids to Nearby Nature for San Diego Natural History Museum’s Sustainable Planet: Children and Nature lecture series tomorrow. There are so many compelling reasons to get kids out in their neighborhoods and my hope is that this is dawning on the masses and there is a dramatic cultural shift in this direction taking place right now, like it feels there is. Anyway, why I am adding…See More

Yasmin Shaddox replied to Carmen Field's discussion How can Natural Teachers empower or enable fellow educators? in the group Natural Teachers Network
"What a great idea! What teachers really need to learn from a mentor is the value of getting kids outside and how NOT to feel overwhelmed by it. So often we teachers, especially new ones, feel like we are asked to do more and more until our plate is…"

Profile Information

Bio
Currently on a leave of absence to raise my son, I have been teaching since college. I have been an outdoor/environmental educator in the states of California, Colorado, Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico, and abroad in Chile. Here in my hometown, I have taught in traditional school mainly in 5th and 6th grade. I have a multiple subject teaching credential and a Master's in Science Education (k-12). My goal in heading back to the classroom was to bring outdoor education to the students who, I felt, needed it the most. My aim was to bring nature into the lives of my inner city students. It has been so rewarding and challenging, but successful. Connecting children with nature opens up their potential and reaps incredible rewards.

Hello Yasmin and welcome. Thanks so much for joining the Natural Teachers Network. Please share your thoughts and ideas there for others to consider and respond. Teachers can be a powerful force of change in the lives of children, and we are hoping all teachers in all disciplines pledge to take their students outside to use nature as a classroom. Good to have you with us, yet another in growing group from San Diego County, where I used to live, not too far from where Rich lives now. John

Hi Yasmin,
Idon't have a page of my own on this site, but my interest is in getting adults back into nature in an authentic way, so that we can all bring about the change for children to connect with their own true sense of nature.
Looking forward to getting to know you.
I'm on the East Coast, in CT.
Maybe we can be fb friends, too?
