The Rose in My Garden is a wonderful collaborative work by Arnold and Anita Lobel. This cumulative book is filled with descriptive text and detailed illustrations that draw the reader in and beg the question, “What’s going on in this garden?”
The story starts with a simple sentence: “This is a rose in my garden.” Add a bee sleeping on the rose in the garden and we’re off on a journey through a very colorful flowerbed. Hollyhocks, marigolds, zinnias, and daisies all have their turn in this rhyming, repetitive text.
Children will enjoy finding the new details that are added as the perspective widens and the illustrations become more complex. A new bug or animal appears with the turn of each page and the introduction of each flower. The Rose in My Garden is a visual feast. Every illustration is a botanical study that can be used to inspire budding gardeners and naturalists. This forty-page book could take hours to read if a child wanted to study and discuss each detail and happening. What a great way to spend a few hours.
Just when you think the garden visit is coming to an end, another animal enters the garden and peace is disrupted. Not to worry, peace will return as the story comes full circle.
This book is listed as appropriate for 4-8 year old children. My daughter, eight years old, enjoyed reading the book to her five-year-old brother. Let us know how you like The Rose in My Garden. Happy Reading!
