I was born in Guatemala and migrated to the US at 8 years old. Growing up my father who is of Mayan descent thought me to respect and love the earth. I felt a large disconnect to nature as I was growing up in Los Angeles and rarely had the chance to explore my local wilderness. Now as an adult I realize that we as a modern society have forgotten how important our connection to nature is for our physical and emotional well being. I currently work as an outdoor educator exposing youth from low income communities to nature. This communities currently are not getting fair and equitable access to wilderness areas and they suffer from a high rate of childhood obesity. It is my job at this time to increase awareness on the importance of nature exposure and the protection and preservation of wilderness areas.
