MOTHER NATURE'S CHILD Trailer

MOTHER NATURE'S CHILD, an exploration of nature’s role in the health and development of children, is now available on DVD along with a study guide insert. We began filming in early 2009 and just released the film in December 2010. As an entire generation of children disconnects from the natural world, we ask: what will they lose intellectually, emotionally, physically, spiritually? Why do children need unstructured time outside? How important is risk-taking to healthy child development? How is play a form of learning? Why are teachers resistant to taking students outside? How can inner city kids connect with nature? What does it mean to educate the “whole” child?
To address these questions, we have filmed children of all ages and interviewed parents, teachers and a number of experts. Please be in touch if you would like more information or would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to help us with outreach efforts.

It is meaningful to get parents thinking about thier kids and thier own lives and lifestyles and essenmtial to get the kids out

I am the Executive Director of the Center for Sustainability at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC. I would love to host a screening for this film if there is any interest in bringing it to this region. I have a personal interest in connecting our kids to the natural world and will help spread this message here.

Funnily enough I really liked the last few shots ...here in the UK the idea of children not wearing buoyancy aids whilst canoeing would be regarded as "risky" !!! Please let me know when the film is complete.

The film will most likely be broadcast on PBS stations (we've had requests already), used in higher education classrooms, screened for communities, outdoor education centers, teacher conferences, and hopefully, screened by families and neighbors to stimulate discussion in living rooms around the country. It is being directed toward an adult audience: high school and up. And we would love it to be screened by community coalitions, perhaps used for fund-raising events and panel discussions. Will keep you posted on our progress.
