Hello everyone,
I'm new to this group and look forward to connecting with you all in the future. I'm a practicing Landscape Architect and a university lecturer and have been involved with a number of community engagement projects with communities, schools and non-profit organizations. As a way of introduction, I thought I'd share a link to one of my projects in my hometown - Mortensen Mounds Monarch Waystation.
To-date, this project has involved greater than 350 volunteer, student and faculty hours to restore a former construction dump site into a community garden. Our work continues this summer and beyond - I look forward to sharing updates as we move forward.
Best regards,
Tom Neppl

Are you participating in S.O.S. (Serve Outside September)? It's a designated month for Natural Service to restore our planet and ourselves.

Please share your photos and stories of outdoor service here.
At Inside the Outdoors, we are lucky to host several service projects each year. Support from our partners makes this possible. Yesterday we hosted an MLK Day of Service at Rancho Sonado, one of our environmental education sites. Thanks to the Children and Nature Network and Richard Louv (for the inspiration), OneOC (for promoting our MLK Day of Service), Brea Olinda High School Friends for Change Club members Briana and Katherine (for helping lead the event), and all of the volunteers who helped!
We spent the day working on a seedling propagation nursery and James Pond restoration. The seedlings are donated to local schools for school gardens. James Pond is a freshwater pond that is the centerpiece for student and community environmental education programs that reach over 12,000 community members each year. I am going to be in the Sacramento/Oakland, CA area for some recruiting events and to help teach a leadership class at the end of January beginning of February. If there is anyone out there who is interested in attending any of the events or meeting up please let me know. In other news I am trying to build a Jr. Smokejumper program, which will look like a Jr. Ranger program with science and conservation education components but would have a more pronounced focus on physical fitness. I have sent a letter to Let’s Move and am in touch with the Forest Service Conservation Education program and the National Smokejumper Association (who already have a small program going in West Yellowstone, MT). Any thoughts on who else might be interested?
Hey, folks. I thought you'd like to know about this Grant opportunity from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Grants are being offered for youth conservation job programs. Apply by Jan. 27. See this link for details:

Hey, Matthew! It's great to hear from you. Your enthusiasm is certainly contagious. I'm sure you're doing a great deal to inspire the next generation! You've come to the right place to find like-minded people who are doing the same. Let's G.O.! and Serve Outdoors are going to continue to draw people to the outdoors. Hope you and others will keep talking. Cheers.
I am very excited I found this network. As a Smokejumper with the US Forest Service, I look 10 years down the road and wonder if there will be enough interest in working outside, being physically challenged and caring about our natural resources to sustain my line of work. Movements like Let’s GO give me hope. We need the general public to support the idea that natural resource conservation is worth investing in and we need individuals to be interested in perusing it as a lifestyle (my work feels like more than a career). I have a cool job; I get paid to be physically fit, work outdoors and to be a part of conservation in action, so how can I use this to inspire the next generation?
